Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction
I'm beginning an eight week (albeit self-paced) program on mindfulness based stress reduction. I invite you to join me on this journey. All materials can be found here.
My first focused attempt at meditation in over 12 years was this morning, October 10, 2014. The first meditation of this program is a body scan meditation. I finally felt ready and focused. I have to say I was proud that I was attentive to the instructions for a full 30 minutes. Guided meditations are often difficult for me, as I hear the person's voice as distracting in some way. This time, however, I decided that I was not going to let superficial things like someone's voice get in the way of my practice. By the end, I rather enjoyed the narrator's voice.
In journaling after practice, I noted a deep relaxation and appreciation for parts of my body, and eventually, my entire body. The breath/life I breathed into each part felt exhilarating and meaningful. As you can imagine, having two cats and three dogs in the house can prove quite a distraction. But, my experience today was a good one. If a dog or cat came into my space, I just let him/her sniff my face and walk away. I have decided that they must learn when my time is to be alone and that my space is for that time. I've attached pictures of my space. I'm looking forward to today's remaining, informal practice and tomorrow's meditation.
